Why buy second hand

An interest in antiques, vintage and second hand has never been more popular or relevant with shoppers choosing flea markets over the high street nowadays to purchase items to decorate their home.

There are lots of advantages of buying second hand. It is ultimately the most sustainable way to shop for not only interiors, but clothing, books and for your garden too. You can find some unique, affordable pieces that whilst unloved by some can be loved by another and so the cycle goes on. This is a gentle reminder that we are rarely the true owners, just the temporary custodians of these objects. There is also a certain amount of satisfaction that comes from buying this way which can become quite addictive!

I grew up always popping into antique fairs, bric a brac and jumble sales with my Mother so i got the bug from quite a young age i guess. Being an art student I used to love buying second hand clothes and customising them. Painting old pieces of furniture was also a hobby of mine, upcycling and giving a new lease of life to an unwanted item was a fun thing to do.

When looking for vintage items prepare to shop around, look in charity shops, flea markets and car boot sales, remember second hand doesn’t necessarily mean second best. Think about key interesting pieces that add a bit of vintage to your home. This might be a piece of art, a pretty jug or a planter for your garden, you will end up creating an eclectic look that seems effortless, thought about and probably cheaper.

Give it a go!
